The Creemore Braves have ousted the Barrie Red Sox four games to three to win another championship in the North Dufferin Baseball League and take home the prestigious Challenge Cup.
Creemore and Barrie started the championship series on September 9, with two games being played each weekend up to September 30, when Creemore won the seventh game in the best of seven series.
The Braves were the defending champions and the second place team within the regular season while the Red Sox's ended in fourth place. However, each game played demonstrated why these two teams made the final series. It is evident in the fact that it took the full seven games for Creemore to win the championship.
Creemore won the first game by a score of 4 to 2, but then lost three straight to Barrie. Scores for games two, three and four were 5 to 4, 5 to 3, and 4 to 0 respectively. Creemore ended their losing in game five with a score of 3 to 0 and then defeated Barrie in two more games with scores of 10 to 4 and 4 to 0 to take the championship.
This is the 14th time that Creemore has won the Challenge Cup, which was donated by L.C.A. Strother in 1931, with their first win in 1938.
The North Dufferin League consisted of 12 senior teams this year but only 8 teams made playoffs. Ivy, Creemore, New Lowell, Barrie, Midland, Bolton, Orillia and Aurora made playoffs while Clarksburg, Lisle, Clearview and Mansfield failed to gain enough points to make the top 8.
Creemore faced Orillia in the first round and then New Lowell in the second to make the finals. Barrie defeated Bolton in the first and beat Ivy in the second to make the finals.
With another season over, the future looks bright for the League as continued interest is maintained and great baseball is played.
