Creemore Braves Win Third Consecutive Championship

September 24, 2007

Game six of the North Dufferin Baseball League Championship Series between the New Lowell Knights and the Creemore Braves was played yesterday at New Lowell Recreation Park with the Braves defeating the Knights 5-2 and winning their third consecutive championship and their fifteenth in total.

The battle of County Road 9 began on September 8, with games being played on weekends. On September 8 Creemore shutout New Lowell 2-0 while on September 9 New Lowell shut out Creemore 9-0 in game two. Games three and four were played on September 15 and 16 with each team winning their home game by scores of 3-1. Game five was played on September 22 where Creemore won by a score of 4-3.

For the first two innings of the final game both teams were unable to score, but in the third Creemore broke it open with a run by Jeff Akitt. Darryl Fremlin scored Creemore's second run in the fourth inning while Andrew Millsap, Fremlin and Robert Kinghan plated runs in the sixth frame to make the score 5-0.

New Lowell scored two runs in their half of the sixth when Bernie Young and Pete Baldry scored.

Jesse MacIntyre started the game pitching for New Lowell, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out one. MacIntyre was pulled during the sixth inning after loading the bases. Reliever Lance Bryan was not able to hold Creemore and over his two innings let in three runs on one hit and had two strikeouts.

The Braves starting pitcher Matt Baldry pitched five and one third innings giving up two runs on four hits and striking out one. In relief Brad Grieveson closed out the game allowing no runs, giving up two hits and striking out two New Lowell batters.

Coach Peter Kinghan of Creemore was all smiles after the game. Asked about his team's third consecutive win, Kinghan responded that "three times is pretty remarkable".

Scott Anderson, secretary and league convenor thanked both teams for a great series. In particular he mentioned New Lowell's accomplishments in making it to the final series. New Lowell barely made the playoffs, defeated both the first and second place teams in the two rounds of playoffs and then went six games against the third place Creemore team. "[New Lowell] should be very proud for making it this far."

Anderson also presented the 76 year old Strother's Challenge Cup to Peter Kinghan and Brad Grieveson of the Creemore Braves.
