Creemore wins provincial 'B' title

September 07, 2010

Local North Dufferin senior teams had a busy weekend of baseball at Ontario Championships across the province.

Creemore Braves were the big winner capturing the provincial 'B' title in Strathroy. Creemore started their weekend with a 1-0 win over West Niagara and followed it with victories over Niagara Falls 14-4 and Kendal 7-2. In Creemore's fourth game they met league rival New Lowell Knights and were upset 2-1.

However, in the quarterfinals they defeated Merritton 2-0 and advanced to meet New Lowell again, this time, winning the semifinal contest 4-1. In the championship game Creemore faced Exeter winning 3-2.

New Lowell also played well, losing in the semis to Creemore. They faced off with Merritton first winning with a 6-5 decision and followed with wins against Sarnia 15-2 and Creemore. They met Exeter in the quarterfinals and lost 2-1 giving Exeter a bye into the finals with Creemore and New Lowell meeting in the semifinals, which Creemore won.

Meanwhile the 'C' championship proved promising for Bolton 'A' Brewers who moved up a class after their 'D' championship win last year. Bolton made it to the finals but lost to Tillsonburg 1-0 in extra innings. Bolton suffered an earlier loss against Tillsonburg 6-3, but beat Southwest London 8-4, Fort Erie 8-2, Port Hope 5-3, and Welland 7-6 to make it to the finals.

Host Orillia Majors and Barrie Red Sox 'B' lost two games, eliminating them from play. Orillia lost to Welland 5-4 and Ivy 11-2. Barrie went down to Port Hope 2-1 and Ivy 2-1.

Ivy Leafs managed four games, with a loss in their first to Fort Erie 5-2, and wins against Orillia and Barrie. Their second loss was against Southwest London 9-6.

In Port Lambton the 'D' tournament was held with 18 rather than 19 teams. The London Sting Rays dropped out Thursday afternoon granting Lisle Astros a win. As per rules, the score was 7-0 for Lisle. Lisle defeated Leamington 5-3 but fell to Woodslee in their third game 15-1. They bounced back with a 3-2 win over Midland and a 13-0 win over Bolton. They received a bye into the semifinals where they lost to Port Lambton 12-2.

Both Midland Indians and Bolton 'B' Braves also started off with wins for their first two games. Midland faced Forest capturing a 4-2 victory, followed with an 11-9 win over the London Dodgers. Midland and Bolton met in each of their third games, with Bolton winning the game 7-4. Midland then lost to Lisle knocking them out of the tournament.

Bolton saw action with host Port Lambton in their first game pulling out a 2-1 win, followed by a 6-3 decision over Corunna, and the win over Midland. They lost their fourth game to Courtright 4-3 and were knocked out in their fifth game with a loss to Lisle.
